Q&A
Answers to the 10 Most-Asked Questions
About Filmax Ultra-Fine Filtration:

Q.
I’ve heard that oil "breaks down" during service and must be replaced at regular intervals to protect engines and hydraulic systems from damage?

A.
Most experts agree that the basic properties of oil do not change during service. Although, oil can become contaminated by particles and moisture to the point that it cannot protect the lubricating system from wear and corrosion. The levels of contamination can be reduced and maintained at low levels with the use of ultra-fine filtration. Filmax ultra-fine filtration can extend the useful life of oil by 4-5 times in engine crankcase lubrication systems, and usually longer in stationary hydraulic and lubrication systems.

Q.
I have full flow filters on all my equipment. Aren’t full flow filters adequate for keeping oil clean?

A.
Full flow filters do what they are designed to do, remove solids in the 25-40 micron range. They are not designed to remove particles in the so-called wear range the 5-15 micron clearances found in bearings, pumps and valves), nor do they remove moisture or varnish compounds which form in oil. Over the life of the equipment (even well-maintained equipment) varnishes and sludge can form on parts and clog valves, seals, pumps and fluid passages

Q.
How does Filmax maintain oil at levels of cleanliness which are superior to new oil?

A.
New oil frequently contains particles in the wear range which exceeds the maximum contamination levels specified by the equipment manufacturer! By removing particles in the wear range; as well as, the moisture and varnishes which form in oil during service, Filmax actually maintains oil at cleanliness levels which exceed the new oil and equipment manufactures specifications.

Q.
If I install Filmax on my operating engine, won’t it starve my engine of lubricating oil?

A.
No! You must add oil to the engine to equal the volume contained in the filtration can instead connecting line, but the flow rate through the element is small compared to the oil flow to the engine. No changes in oil pressure or volume will be detectable. We strongly recommend that part of the savings from using Filmax be spent on quarterly oil analysis (or analysis at the usual oil change intervals). This will provide better information on engine conditions that oil changes alone, and provide assurance that the additive package and particle count in the oil makes it suitable for continued use.

Q.
Does reclaiming oil with the use of ultra-fine filtration restore the original color of the oil?

A.
Sometimes yes and sometimes no. Some industrial lubricating fluids will show dramatic recovery of their original color, sometimes to the point at which they cannot be distinguished from new fluid. Nearly every fluid will show some visible improvement in cleanliness with the removal of moisture and particle in the "wear range" (5-15 microns) for engines and hydraulic/lubricating systems. We rely on laboratory analysis to tell us how clean the oil is and that the oil is suitable for continued service.

Q.
Will Filmax remove the additive package from my oil?

A.
No, generally additive molecules are much too small to be retained by ultra-fine filtration. Additive molecules are consumed by being bound to particle and moisture in the oil. By removing the particles and moisture, additive packages are stabilized and extended and sometimes restored with the use of Filmax.

Q.
Are stationary units required to ensure clean oil?

A.
We recommend that customers consider installing dedicated units in order to enjoy the advantages of having clean oil in their machines every single day. Lubricating and hydraulic systems seeing service in gritty or abrasive environments are particularly suited to on-infiltration. A dedicated system protecting, say a 250 HP air compressor lubricating system, will pay for itself very quickly by minimizing costly synthetic oil changes and protecting a very expensive machine from accelerated wear.

Q.
What about portable systems for general shop use?

A.
Frequently, we sell portable systems to new customers and they experiment with using the machine on several different applications (i.e., hydraulic fluid, cutting oil, turbine oils, quench oils, air compressor oil). Once they realize the cost benefits of ultra-fine filtration (and their service costs for fluid maintenance) they purchase dedicated systems which provide continuous fluid polishing.

Q.
How long will a single filtration element last?

A.
Every engine or machine produces contaminants at different rate, but generally speaking Filmax will reclaim used oil for about 25 - 50 cents per gallon. Dedicated systems (when started with clean oil) will use no more than one or two filters per year. When Filmax is installed on a reservoir with dirty fluid, it may take two or more elements to remove months or years worth of contaminate build-up.

Q.
I see lots of advertising for after market filtration systems. Why should I choose Filmax?

A.
Filmax holds two separate patents on specific improvements made to oil filtration technology. Most of our competitor are still applying 1950’sera technology to fluid service problems, and our patented improvements provide better filtration performance and longer filter life! We guarantee to out perform other industrial oil filtration system, even systems selling at twice our price!
